Sonnencarree receives EU GreenBuilding Award12.11.2009
"We are happy and proud to have been awarded the our third GreenBuilding certificate for the refurbishing of the Sonnencarree in Munich," says MEAG Managing Director Dr. Hans-Joachim Barkmann. This EU certificate confirms that the property undershoots the ENEV 2007 limit by more than 25 percent – indeed, the Sonnencarree actually lies 56 percent below this minimum. The ENEV value, measured in kilowatt-hours per square metre and year, reflects the primary energy requirement of a building. "We will also meet the stricter ENEV 2009 requirements that came into effect on 1 October," Barkmann continues. MEAG is already on the list of official partners in the EU's GreenBuilding programme, which contains owners and tenants of non-residential buildings that have earned merits with energy-saving building concepts and sustainable construction. MEAG also used a concept of this kind in Munich's Sonnencarree, a twelve-storey, more than 40 metre high office building on the corner of Josephspitalstraße 15 / Sonnenstraße 19 in Munich's old town centre. The new hybrid double-skin on the Sonnencarree enables natural ventilation of the offices and commercial spaces. The structural and automation concept means that lighting, air-conditioning and heating are all controlled in a way that reduces energy consumption to a minimum. The refurbishment of the Sonnencaree, which was originally built in the late 1950s, will be completed by 2010, then offering 12,150 square meters of office and retail space in a prime central-city location. "MEAG consciously decided in favour of the GreenBuilding Partner honour, as this award places extremely tough demands on the energy efficiency of commercial buildings and is thus held in high regard by the industry," Barkmann says. With the recognition as GreenBuilding Partner, the German energy agency Dena, which is in charge of the certification on behalf of the EU Commission, confirms that MEAG is looking out for its own future and that of the planet, by investing in the energy efficiency of its real estate projects. The company: MEAG MUNICH ERGO AssetManagement GmbH in Munich is the asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO. With offices in New York and Hong Kong, MEAG has an international orientation and also manages the assets of clients outside the Munich Re Group. MEAG currently manages assets to the value of around € 191 billion, around ten billion of which in real estate.
